If you have been riding trains through the Swiss countryside since childhood, it makes sense to create a layout with this theme. Thirty-year-old Jessie from Switzerland does just that in scale N. And all on a small layout that can be put together in ten minutes.

After first having an H0 layout, an N scale layout came in 2019. “I just wanted more options on the space available. That was my main reason,” he says. The layout we see has a good format, in three parts a complete Swiss landscape unfolds at the size of 120 x 350 cm. “I can put these together in 10 minutes, and put them away again,” he explains.

He then immediately has a tip for beginners: “If you don’t know what scale you want to use, think carefully about the space available to you. Then plan your layout in a computer program, for example CDM rails. This way you will discover the possibilities before you proceed to purchase”.

On the layout we find mostly Fleischmann and Kato/Hobbytrain models. Except for a TGV and two Austrian steam locomotives, we find only Swiss rolling stock on the layout. And everything as realistic as possible. As soon as in big business the trains are modified; the same is done on the layout. The layout will be decorated with buildings by Vollmer, Kibri and Faller. All of that is analog controlled, including a streetcar and cable car.

A special showpiece is the circus Knie model. The basis are Fleischmann’s sets containing the circus wagons. The entire marquee was self-built and dressed with Fleischmann wagons and vehicles. In addition, other elements from the likes of Articec and Wiking complete it.

Jessie eagerly awaits the release of the SBB RABe 511 KISS by Hobbytrain. This one is delayed again and again. Trains from the KISS platform are very common in Switzerland. So far, no supplier is marketing this train in N. The same goes for Swiss steam trains, which are still available only from the defunct Lemaco. Often at high prices.
